How guys vs. girls use social media.

While on YouTube I stumbled across this video that talks about the difference in
ways guys and girls use social media. If you watch the video I believe you will
find some humor in it. I thought it was pretty funny because it seemed way to
accurate. It is a stereotypical video, but people that are familiar with social
media would probably be able to relate to a lot of Dillon's points. Social
media is truly becoming a huge addiction in our world. Everybody is constantly
online in one way or another tinkering with some sort of social media. Dillon
relates to snap chat, which in the past half a year has completely skyrocketed.
I’m pretty sure nearly every single friend of mine is now on snap chat.
Everybody is always looking for the new big social media thing. It is a huge
industry and it is funny to see a video with some humor about it. Hope you
enjoyed.

A classmate review.

Here is a link to my classmate’s blog.

“A study from Harvard shows that talking about yourself online can cause a part of your brain to light up that also lights up when using an addictive substance such as cocaine.  For some people it is very easy to get hooked.”

I chose to write a quick response to this statement written by my fellow classmate because she also relates to the Harvard study I touched on in my previous post. Her findings were very similar to mine in that talking about yourself online triggers the same part of your brain that many other pleasures’ trigger. She relates it to the pleasure of an addictive substance such as cocaine, and how easily it is to become hooked. In my post I related it to things such as food, money, and sex, which are also addicting things. I believe after reading her post that we both took the same knowledge out of looking into the Harvard study. I agree with her statement that social media can be a very addicting past time. Her statement is a great addition to my previous post.

New Harvard study shows why social media is so addictive for many.

Brown, L (2014). New Harvard Study Shows Why Social Media Is So Addictive for Many. retrieved April 8, 2014, from Design World Web Site: http://marketing.wtwhmedia.com/new-harvard-study-shows-why-social-media-is-so-addictive-for-many

In the article Brown talks about a study at Harvard University regarding why people are so attached to social media. They found that posting something about ones self to the public triggers the same part of the brain that is associated with the sensation of pleasure. This puts posting something on the Internet about you in the same category as things such as eating food, getting money, or even having sex. Brown states that it is obviously to a smaller degree of pleasure but still quite similar. It is highly addicting to some people to be able to talk about themselves and have an audience to listen. I found this to be an interesting study and it poses a good thought regarding social media. It makes sense as to why people could get so addicted to social media. Everybody likes attention and to talk about themselves.

Is Google making us stupid?

Is Google Making Us Stupid? By: Nicholas Carr

This article talks about what the author believes the effects of Google and the Internet is having on society. The author strongly feels as though the Internet is changing his way of thinking. People are reading less books because they do not have the same sustained amount of concentration. They want their information fast and as easy as possible. He states that the web is hurting people's focus. Obviously the Internet has some major advantages, but Carr believes it also comes with a price.
Personally I agree with a lot of Carr’s points. I feel similar in that it has turned into an inconvenience to read books anymore. There are so many other ways to retain information or get a story in the world today that books have become less popular. I wouldn’t say that Google is making us stupid, but it definitely is worth the thought.

Shnarped hockey.

Schnarped is a new social media app that allows fans to follow their favorite hockey players closer then ever before. NCAA and pro hockey players have pre-made accounts by the app. Once they take control of their account these player's will become verified. This allows fan's and people to know that it is truly that player and not a fake account they are communicating with and following. Goal highlights, stats, and interviews will all appear under the player’s account the moment they take place. Kid's and fan's can give a pound to players for their accomplishments. It brings the superstar's a lot closer to their fan's, and allows the fan's to feel like they are on the ice.
